Main Content

¡Hola, amigos! I'm Fiesta, and I want to tell you about my amazing aquatic friend Leo the Galápagos Sea Lion! He's the life of the party in these waters! 🦭

Leo's Aquatic Superpowers

Leo is basically an underwater superhero! Check out his amazing abilities:

He can swim up to 25 mph - that's faster than most boats in the harbor!
He can dive down 300 feet deep and hold his breath for up to 8 minutes.
His front flippers work like powerful propellers to zoom through the water.
He can rotate his back flippers forward to walk on land - try doing that!

Surfing Champion

Long before humans invented surfing, Leo and his friends were riding the waves! Leo loves to surf because it's fun AND it saves energy when he's traveling along the coast. Sometimes he'll catch a wave just for the joy of it - he's basically the original surfer dude!

Social Butterfly of the Sea

Leo is super social and loves hanging out with his colony. They have different calls to communicate - mothers and pups can recognize each other's voices even in a crowd of hundreds! They play together, sleep together in cuddle piles, and watch out for each other.

Conservation Status

Galápagos Sea Lions (Zalophus wollebaeki) are listed as **ENDANGERED** with only about **20,000-25,000 individuals** remaining. The population has declined by over 50% in the past 30 years! Climate change and El Niño events severely affect their food supply, causing mass starvation events. Rising ocean temperatures push fish to deeper, colder waters that Leo's mothers can't reach while nursing pups. Introduced diseases and fishing net entanglement add to their challenges.
