Main Content

Greetings, night explorers! I'm Moonfoot, and I want to introduce you to the most mysterious and elusive resident of the Galápagos - Harry the Hoary Bat! He's the only native flying mammal in all the islands! 🦇

Harry's Night Flight Powers

Harry is absolutely amazing at flying! His wings are like natural airplane wings that can:

Fly incredibly fast through the night sky
Make sharp turns and sudden stops
Hover in place while hunting
Fly silently so his prey never hears him coming

He's like a living stealth aircraft!

Harry's Echolocation Superpower

Harry has the coolest navigation system in nature - echolocation! He makes high-pitched sounds (too high for us to hear) and listens for the echoes that bounce back. This creates a "sound picture" of everything around him, even in complete darkness! He can detect a tiny insect flying 30 feet away just by listening to echoes.

Harry's Mysterious Lifestyle

Harry is one of the most secretive animals in the Galápagos! He:

Only comes out at night
Roosts (sleeps) during the day in hidden spots
Migrates to different areas seasonally
Is rarely seen by researchers or tourists

It's like he's the Batman of the Galápagos!

Harry's Aerial Hunting

Harry is an incredible insect hunter! He catches moths, beetles, and other flying insects right out of the air using his mouth or wing membranes like a baseball mitt. He can catch and eat insects while flying at full speed - that's like catching popcorn while running!

Conservation Status

The Galápagos Hoary Bat (Lasiurus brachyotis) has **LIMITED INFORMATION** available about its conservation status. Based on general observations, they appear to have a small but stable population across several islands. However, as the only native bat species in the Galápagos, they face potential threats from habitat changes, light pollution affecting their nocturnal hunting, and climate change impacts on insect populations that they depend on for food.
